The Crown Will Not Whiten With the Other Teeth

Existing restorations respond differently from natural teeth. Discuss colour matching and the order of treatment before starting a whitening product.

Start with what is already there

Whitening does not change the colour of crowns, veneers or fillings in the way it changes natural teeth. The ADA advises discussing suitability before treatment. A visible restoration can therefore affect the result you should expect.[1]

Tell the dentist which teeth bother you and what colour change you want. Ask whether the difference is surface stain, the natural tooth shade or a restoration. Bring the name of any product you have already used.

Plan the sequence

If you are considering both whitening and restorative work, ask how the order affects colour matching. Get an explanation of what can be changed conservatively and what additional treatment would involve. Replacing a healthy restoration is a separate decision with its own cost and implications.

Avoid buying a stronger product to chase a colour mismatch that bleaching cannot solve. Ask for realistic expectations and review the plan before beginning, particularly if you have sensitivity, gum irritation or one tooth that has recently changed colour.
