Same-Day Crowns: How CEREC Technology Works

If you've ever needed a dental crown, you probably remember the process: two separate appointments, a goopy impression tray, and an awkward temporary crown that you had to baby for two weeks while a lab fabricated your permanent restoration. That workflow has been the standard in dentistry for decades, but it's no longer the only option. At Novae Dental Studio in Yorkville, we use CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics) technology to design, mill, and place permanent ceramic crowns in a single visit.
The CEREC system has three core components: an intraoral scanner, computer-aided design (CAD) software, and an in-office milling unit. Together, they replace the traditional process of physical impressions, outside lab fabrication, and the inevitable second appointment. The result is a high-quality ceramic restoration completed in about 90 minutes, start to finish.
Here's how a same-day crown appointment works at our office. First, your dentist prepares the tooth by removing any decay and shaping it to accept a crown — this part is identical to the traditional process. Once the tooth is prepared, we use a 3Shape TRIOS intraoral scanner to capture a precise 3D digital impression. The scanner is a small wand that passes over your teeth, creating a detailed digital model on-screen in real time. There's no impression putty, no gagging, and no discomfort.
With the digital impression complete, your dentist moves to the design phase. Using CEREC's CAD software, we design your crown on a computer screen right in front of you. The software uses the scan data to propose a crown shape based on the anatomy of your surrounding teeth, and your dentist fine-tunes the design — adjusting contours, contact points, and bite surfaces — until it's precisely right. This step typically takes 10 to 15 minutes.
Once the design is finalized, it's sent wirelessly to our CEREC PrimeMill, a compact milling machine in our on-site lab. The PrimeMill carves your custom crown from a solid block of high-quality ceramic material in approximately 5 minutes. We select the ceramic block shade to match your natural teeth, ensuring the final restoration blends seamlessly with your smile.
After milling, the crown goes through a finishing process. Your dentist polishes and, in some cases, applies surface characterization and glaze to achieve a natural lustre and translucency. The crown is then tried in your mouth to verify the fit, bite, and aesthetics. If any adjustments are needed, they're made immediately. Once everything looks and feels right, the crown is permanently bonded to your tooth with dental cement.
The ceramics used in CEREC restorations are not a compromise. Materials like lithium disilicate (e.max) and zirconia-reinforced ceramics offer excellent strength, durability, and aesthetics. They're biocompatible, resistant to staining, and can last 10 to 20 years with proper care — comparable to or better than traditional lab-fabricated crowns.
Beyond crowns, the CEREC system can also produce inlays, onlays, and porcelain veneers in a single visit. This versatility makes it an invaluable tool for restorative and cosmetic dentistry alike. For patients who need multiple restorations, we can often complete several in one session, reducing the total number of appointments significantly.
Patients consistently tell us that the convenience of a same-day crown is what they appreciate most. There's no temporary crown that might crack or fall off. There's no second injection of local anesthesia two weeks later. And there's no time off work for a follow-up appointment. You walk in with a damaged tooth and walk out with a finished, permanent restoration.
If you've been told you need a crown and want to explore the same-day option, we'd be happy to explain the process in more detail during a consultation. Not every case is suited to CEREC — some complex restorations still benefit from traditional lab fabrication — but the majority of single-tooth crowns can be completed chairside. At Novae Dental Studio, having this technology in-house means giving you one more reason to spend less time in the dental chair and more time living your life.
