The Benefit Card Needs One More Question

Confirm the program, eligible person and proposed service before booking dental care through Ontario Works, Emergency Assistance or ODSP.

Identify the exact program

Ontario Works, Emergency Assistance and ODSP do not all provide identical dental benefits. Toronto lists an emergency dental program for eligible adults receiving Ontario Works or Emergency Assistance, and certain adult dependants of ODSP recipients.[1]

ODSP has its own dental arrangements, and Ontario advises confirming that the provider accepts the program. Children and adult dependants may use different routes. Ask your worker or program contact which coverage applies to the person who needs treatment.[2]

Verify the proposed visit

Tell the dental office the program name and ask what information it needs to check eligibility. Describe the current concern clearly. Ask whether the examination and proposed treatment are covered, whether approval is needed, and whether anything would be payable by you.

If another public plan is also active, disclose both and ask the office to confirm the correct billing arrangement. Keep any written authorization and the name of the person who explained it. If coverage is declined, ask the program contact for the reason and the appropriate review route instead of assuming every dental service is excluded.
