Dental Help for a Child, Without Guessing the Rules
A starting guide to Healthy Smiles Ontario for eligible children and youth, including enrolment questions and how to find participating care.

Check eligibility for this child
Healthy Smiles Ontario supports eligible children and youth aged 17 and under from low-income households. It includes preventive, routine and emergency dental services. Some families receiving specified social assistance benefits are automatically enrolled; others need to apply.[1]
Start with Ontario's current program page or your public health unit. Have the child's age and existing coverage details ready. Ask whether enrolment is already active, whether an application is needed, and which documents apply to your household.
Confirm the provider and the service
Before booking, ask whether the dental provider participates and can verify coverage for the proposed visit. The provincial service page explains that cosmetic services, such as whitening, are outside the program.[2]
If the child has pain or another urgent problem, say so immediately and ask about the emergency-care route. Keep program correspondence with the child's appointment information. If the family also has other coverage, disclose it and ask how claims should be handled rather than assuming one card makes the other irrelevant.
