Will My Retainer Fit After a New Crown?
Tell both teams about your retainer before a crown or other restorative work. Plan the fit check, interim instructions and any replacement together.

A crown appointment is booked, and your retainer still fits every night. Mention that before treatment begins. Retainers are fitted to hold teeth in position, while a crown covers a tooth's outer surface. Asking how the proposed restoration and the existing appliance will fit together is a useful part of planning.[1][2]
Bring the appliance, not just its description
Tell the restorative dentist whether you have a clear removable retainer, a wire-and-acrylic retainer, a bonded wire or a combination. Bring removable appliances in their cases. If a separate orthodontic office manages them, give both teams each other's details and ask who will check the fit.
Explain the current wear schedule and any existing difficulty with insertion or removal. An appliance that was already tight should not be described as fitting perfectly before the crown. That distinction helps the team separate an old problem from a new one.

Plan for the temporary and final stages
Ask whether there will be a temporary restoration and whether your appliance instructions will differ during that period. Confirm when the fit will be checked again after the final restoration. If a replacement retainer is expected, ask when the impression or scan should be taken and what to wear while it is made.
There is no useful universal answer that every new crown requires a new retainer, or that the old one will always work. The restoration, appliance and examination determine the plan. Get the likely charges and responsible office clear before you discover an unresolved question at bedtime.
Report a changed fit promptly
If the appliance is painful, sharp or clearly distorted, the AAO advises against continuing to wear it and recommends contacting the orthodontist. Do not heat the plastic, cut away a section or bite hard to seat it. Ask for an interim plan rather than leaving the issue unresolved for weeks.[3]
