The Denture Has Its Own Cleaning Routine

Keep denture care and mouth care in the same routine. Ask about suitable cleaners, safe handling and overnight storage for your particular appliance.

Use a suitable cleaner

Removable dentures need daily cleaning. The CDA advises gentle brushing with a suitable denture cleaner or mild soap, and warns that ordinary toothpaste and household cleaners can be too abrasive. Rinse thoroughly before putting the denture back in your mouth.[1]

Ask the dental team to demonstrate the routine for your appliance, particularly around metal clasps or attachments. Check the product instructions rather than mixing cleaners. Clean over a folded towel or a protected basin so an accidental drop is less likely to break it.[1]

Care for the mouth as well

Cleaning the appliance does not replace cleaning your gums and any remaining teeth. Ask for an overnight removal and storage plan, including what solution is appropriate for the materials. Avoid hot water, which can distort the denture.[1]

If handling it is difficult, bring that up before the routine becomes frustrating. A different grip, setup or caregiver demonstration may help. Report cracks, sore areas or changes in fit rather than attempting a home repair.
