Why a Treated Tooth Needs Another Look
A previously treated tooth can need further assessment. Ask what has changed, which options are available and whether an endodontist should review it.

Start with the new finding
A recommendation to revisit a root canal can be confusing. Ask the dentist to explain the symptoms, examination or imaging findings behind it. The CDA describes retreatment as reopening and cleaning the canal system again; in some situations, root-end surgery is considered instead.[1]
Bring the date and location of the earlier treatment, any available records and a description of what has changed. Mention a loose crown, new pain when biting or swelling. The fact that a tooth has already been treated does not make a new symptom irrelevant.
Understand the choices
Ask whether the tooth can be restored reliably, what an endodontist's assessment would add, and how the alternatives compare. Request the likely sequence, costs, uncertainties and follow-up for each reasonable option. A second opinion can help if you still do not understand the recommendation.
If there is active pain or swelling, ask how urgently you need care while arranging that opinion. Keep the emergency contact instructions. A comparison of options should include a safe plan for the time between appointments.
