The Wire Behind Your Teeth Feels Different
A bonded retainer needs attention if it loosens or changes. Contact the treating team, keep the area clean and avoid bending or pulling the wire.

Report the change
A fixed retainer is attached behind the teeth. The British Orthodontic Society advises seeking advice if it becomes loose and emphasizes careful cleaning around it. A wire can need attention even when it remains attached at some points.[1]
Tell the office where it feels different, whether an edge is rubbing and whether you have noticed movement. Ask how soon it should be checked. Do not keep testing it with your tongue, pull it off or bend it back into place.
Clarify the interim plan
If you also have a removable retainer, ask whether and how to use it while waiting. Do not force it over an area that has changed. Follow the office's advice for any temporary comfort measure.
At the review, ask for a demonstration of cleaning around the wire and between the teeth. Confirm who will check it over time, including after you have finished active orthodontic treatment. A fixed appliance removes the need to remember insertion, but it still needs care and review.
