Who Gets Paid When the Claim Goes Through?

Electronic claims and direct payment are different arrangements. Confirm who receives the insurance payment and what is due at your visit.

Ask the payment question plainly

"Can you submit my claim?" does not answer "Do I pay today?" Under assignment of benefits, the insurer pays the dental office directly. Under other arrangements, the patient pays the office and receives the insurer's reimbursement. An office can submit a claim electronically in either situation.[1]

Before the appointment, ask which arrangement applies to your specific plan and visit. Find out what portion you must pay, which payment methods are accepted, and whether a delayed insurer response changes what is due. Keep a current benefit card or member number available.

Keep the two records

Save the office receipt and the insurer's explanation of benefits. Compare the service date, provider and amount before assuming a difference is an error. If something looks wrong, ask the party responsible for that part of the record to explain it.

Do not assume a private workplace plan and a government program use identical payment rules. Tell the office which coverage you are using. If paying upfront would be difficult, discuss it before care is scheduled so you can understand the available arrangements without a surprise at checkout.
